Maintenance is important for making sure that your water heater will have a good long life working for your home. Tankless water heaters need regular maintenance because minerals can accumulate in the heating chamber that can eventually erode away the walls and cause maintenance problems and higher energy costs.
The best way to maintain your water heater is with professional service from a plumber at John Baethke and Son Plumbing. Here are some of the things we do for tankless water heater maintenance.
Cleaning the Intake Screen
Tankless water heaters have a screen that keeps unwanted materials out of the water and out of the system. These screens need to be cleaned out occasionally to keep them working well and to keep those unwanted particles out of the water and the system.
Flushing and Draining
To clean out the mineral build-ups that can cause problems in tankless water systems, we flush and drain vinegar through the system. We never use chemicals to clean water heaters because water heaters are a part of your drinking and bathing water system!
The first thing we do is turn off the gas so it doesn't fire while we're working. We do leave the power on, though, so that all the interior valving will open up for us to complete the job. After that, we turn off the water valves and carefully remove the caps. Extremely hot water under high pressure may still be present in the system, so we take extra care during this step.
Next, we attach hosing so we can then flush and drain the vinegar solution through the system. This usually takes about an hour, depending on the model of the water heater. Once the flushing and draining process is complete, we safely turn the water heater back on so that you will have hot, fresh water once again.
Professional Service You Can Trust
You might be reading this and thinking, "I could flush the water heater myself!" But because of the extremely hot water and high pressure in the system, it is best to call a professional plumber for service to avoid injury.
We have years of experience repairing and maintaining tankless water heaters, and our expert technicians are qualified to repair, service and install 12 different brands of top-quality water heaters. In the long run, tankless water heater maintenance will save you money by preventing future problems and high energy costs.
Because Chicago water is so good with only about 9 grains of hardness, we only recommend flushing your tankless water heater about every three years.
